Santos, Reyes, &
Nativities
In Puerto Rico, the carving of Saints (Santos) and Wise Men (Reyes) is traditional art. Each artist has his/her own style and technique that provide great variety when starting a collection of these hand-carved figurines.
Considered to be art pieces, we display the Reyes in our houses all year-long, not just during the Christmas season.
You will notice that the Wise Men are riding Horses, and not the traditional Camels. In Puerto Rico, we say that the Reyes come by horse, since camels are not seen in P.R.

♥ Availability of colors and designs will depend on the artist and the materials at hand.

item. They can be purchased separately.

About the Artisan:
The Orta Family is a well-known family of carvers in Ponce. Domingo Orta, Sr., a self-taught carver, began the family tradition; he passed away in 2007. His wife and children all learned the art of carving, and continue the family legacy. It is said that of his sons, Domingo, Jr.'s carvings are the most similar to his father's.

About the Artisan:
Son of the recognized carver Celestino Avilés, Antonio began learning how to carve from a young age by watching his father. The 3rd of 10 talented children, at 27 years old Antonio was selected by the Governor as Artisan of the Year. Throughout the years he has had many successful art exhibits in several countries. Some of his most important pieces have been acquired by museums in Spain, Australia, Sweden, and Japan.
